Aloe christianii Reynolds (1936)

DESCRIPTION: Rather variable taxon. Perennial herb, normally solitary but sometimes suckering to form small groups. Branching at base to small groups, stems 60-100 cm long. Leaves 30-40, ensely rosulate, 30-75x10-15 cm, dull green to grey-green, upper surface sometimes with few white spots. Teeth 3-5 mm long, 10-20 mm apart. Inflorescence 200-350 cm long panicle, branched in the top third, with 5-10 erect branches, lower sometimes rebranched, raceme 25 cm long with ca 50 reddish flowers. Close to A. pretoriensis. The flowers are dull red, the buds typically erect and the open flowers pendulous. The plants are usually hidden in vegetation but the tall flowering stems are conspicuous above the grass. Flowering time: December-january.
Synonymy:
DISTRIBUTION: Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Angola. Widespread in woodland at altitudes 700-2000m.
CULTIVATION: Easy cultivated in sandy, porous and mineral soil. Minimal temperature is +12 C.
